Has a very interesting collection of military uniforms & acruritements illustrating the history of the various regiment's that have amalgamated over the years. Following the recent amalgamations, you understand the current dress distinctions & traditions of the Duke of Lancasters Regiment. The Regimental Chapel at Fulwood Barracks was designed by the Engineer Officer, Lt Chard, who took part in the action in South Africa, at Rokes Drift , & was depicted in the film 'ZULU' .
Just spent a very enjoyable two and a half hours in this little gem of a museum. I am an adult but it would be suitable for children as there are dressi g up exhibits etc that shou,d appeal to children. was guided round and told stories about the exhibits by very knowledgeable volunteers but if you prefer there are leaflets available which have details of the exhibits. The variety of exhibits relating to the regiments is extensive. What could be a dry story is brought to life by the exhibits which relate to the human stories contained in the exhibits. The musuem covers the period from the early 1600 to the present time. The regimental chapel is also available to view and is worth looking in on.One of the highlights is the Napoleon regimental eagle on display. Its worth going to see this on its own. I can safely say its as rare as hens teeth as most were destroyed following Napoleons defeat.The museum is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday 10 till 4. As it is housed in a working army barracks be prepared to take some form of I.D. as you have to go through the guard house security. Its not a nuisance and I think it adds to the feeling you are going into a real army barracks.
My 5 year old little boy loves it here, he is army obsessed at the moment. There was a staff member on hand to answer his many questions. There are exhibits you can touch and dress up in which is always a bonus with children in tow. Its a nice little museum, we've only spent around an hour here at each visit. As it is a working military barracks security is high and to get in you need to give a few personal details, car reg and a form of ID from one person in the party at the gate.
Absolute gem of a museum. The chapel and main board room are beautiful. Definitely worth a visit!
Wonderful displays and very welcoming, knowledgeable staff. Need to take photo identity to get in( passport or driving licence etc. as it's still an active military base).
